FWC
approves rule to allow peregrine
falcons for falconry in Florida
The
Florida Fish and Wildlife
Conservation Commission (FWC)
approved a rule allowing
falconers to take peregrine falcons
for the sport of falconry at its
meeting in Clewiston on Wednesday.
The U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service determines
the number of falcons that may be
taken over a broad range of states.
It is estimated fewer than five
falcons will be allocated to Florida
in 2010. Under the new rule,
falconers must receive a permit for
the take of peregrine falcons for
falconry.
The FWC will randomly select
applications and issue permits
annually based on the number
allotted to the state.
Priority for receiving a permit will
be given to Florida residents.

This rule change will likely be
enacted ‘as soon as possible after Commission action’.
Except in an
emergency, approved rules go to legal again and are enacted in 30 days or in
a suite of rules on July 1st.
Since the season doesn’t begin until September it is possible this rule will
be enacted on July 1st.
When all of this
is said and done there is still going to be the actual permit issues
hoops to jump thru and there can be “conditions " for a peregrine falcon
tale permit placed in:
1) Rules
2) Permit Conditions
3) Application and or instructions.
Once again I
thank all of those falconers who have taken an active role in showing
up at the meetings.

The
final Federal Falconry Regulations 10/8/08 are out click here !!
Though the rule says the regulations will be effective on 7 November 08,
they won't really take effect in any State until the State transitions to them.
Given that it is already October , we do not believe that the States will be
able to change to
the new system before January 1, 2010.
Final changes the
Federal Falconry regulations listed above as of July 22, 2009 found here.
